What is a Neonatal Ear Clip?
Neonatal Ear Clip is an extension to a pulse oximeter that provides a routine non-invasive oxygen monitor feature that can be performed at the bedside, giving instantaneous results.
Functioning Principle Behind Neonatal Ear Clip.
The sensors contain light-emitting diodes that project infrared light through the tissue. Some of this light passes through the application site and a light-sensitive detector opposite the light source receives it.
What is SpO2?
The judgment of the affinity of red blood cells to oxygen and the readings (blood oxygen levels) reported by the connected oximeters through an oxygen saturation measurement called peripheral capillary oxygen saturation are called SpO2.
Attachment Of The Probe For SpO2 Readings
A probe corresponding to an oximeter can be attached to various portions of the patient’s body, usually the finger, toe, or earlobe.
O2 Readings vary from 0-100% and in healthy adults can range from 94-100%. Numbers below this may indicate Hypoxia which is an absence of enough oxygen in the tissues to sustain bodily functions (arterial oxygen saturation value below 90% causes hypoxia).
Screening Of Covid-19 Infections Using SpO2 Readings
Alternatively, SpO2 sensor readings are an effective tool in screening out covid-19 cases. If the readings drop below the threshold of 90-92%, timely medical evaluation is warranted.
Neonatal Diagnosis Assistance
This method of evaluation proves to be better at detecting congenital heart defects in neonates as compared to ultrasonography & clinical examination alone.
Diagnosis of Respiratory Ailments Using Neonatal Ear Clip.
Accurate measurement of arterial oxygen saturation provides a chance to monitor & diagnose conditions such as acute lung injury, acute respiratory distress syndrome, sleep-related breathing disorders.
Components of the Neonatal Ear Clip
It consists of 2 clip jaws connected by a coil spring. One of the jaws is to be placed at the outside of the ear lobe and provides a retainer ring for inserting the sensor.
The sensor can be rotated in the retainer ring for finding a position in which the sensor cable is not stretched or twisted.
Neonatal Ear Clip- Designed For Comfort
The device is designed in a way that makes it biocompatible with fragile skin while exhibiting a secure fit on the patient’s ear without exerting any uncomfortable pressure all while being cost-friendly & easy to use.
Advantage of Neonatal Ear Clip Over Digit Sensors
It proves to be advantageous over digit sensors in cases where there is a requirement of faster detection of desaturation & re-saturation during low perfusion when digit access is not possible.
Accuracy of Measurement By N.E.C
The ear site may provide oxygen saturation measurements that are less susceptible to changes in peripheral perfusion.
